Telegram SMS Verification Fee: Why It Appears and What to Do
Seeing a Telegram SMS fee or Premium prompt? Learn what it means, how it differs from a rented number, and the safe checks to make before paying.

A Telegram login screen asking for an SMS fee can feel like a scam—especially if you expected a free code. The first question is where the charge appears. Telegram's own official app may show a payment-required verification flow for some numbers, while a separate website may charge to rent a number. Those are different products, with different account-recovery consequences.
What Telegram says about the fee
Telegram's authorization documentation describes a payment-required response that official apps may show when the cost of SMS verification is high for a particular country or provider. In that flow, the user may need to buy Telegram Premium to continue signup or login. Telegram does not say this applies to every Nigerian number or every login. The amount and eligibility are determined by the actual in-app flow, not by an article or a reseller's quote.
Telegram's own interface wording refers to a one-time SMS fee and a short Premium signup. That does not make every third-party request for money legitimate. If someone sends you a link or asks you to transfer money to a personal account to “release” a code, stop and check the prompt inside the official Telegram app yourself.
Three charges people confuse
- Telegram's in-app verification requirement: Shown by an official Telegram client for an eligible login or signup. Review the amount, currency, subscription duration and payment terms in the app store or official flow before deciding.
- Your carrier's SMS or data charge: A charge by your mobile provider is separate from a Telegram purchase. Confirm it with the carrier if your balance changes unexpectedly.
- A temporary-number provider's rental fee: You pay for access to a number that receives an OTP. This does not pay Telegram's own fee, guarantee code delivery, or give you lasting control of the number.
A low-cost rented number can be the most expensive option if the number is reused or later unavailable when Telegram asks for another code. Our temporary-number guide for Telegram explains that recovery risk in more detail.
What to check before paying or trying again
Confirm that you downloaded an official Telegram app, that the phone number is entered in international format, and that you control the number long term. Telegram's FAQ notes that a login code may arrive inside an existing Telegram session instead of by SMS. Check your already signed-in device first. Do not keep requesting codes rapidly or give any OTP to a support contact, seller or stranger.
If the official app presents a fee, read its exact purchase screen. Ask: Is this a Telegram Premium subscription? What duration is shown? Which account and store will be charged? Are there cancellation or renewal terms? Do not infer a fixed naira price from another person's screenshot; currency conversion, platform and local billing can vary. If the flow fails, use Telegram's official support route rather than a paid “unlock” service.
A safer decision path for Nigerian users
For an account you depend on, a SIM or eSIM you control is usually safer than a disposable number. If you already have access to Telegram on another device, secure it: add two-step verification, keep a current recovery email, and consider a passkey where available. Telegram says a passkey can be used instead of an SMS code on supported devices, but it does not replace the need to maintain a current phone number you control.
For a one-off test account, read the platform's rules and the number provider's terms. A temporary number can fail if Telegram rejects the number type or if the OTP never arrives. A provider's advertised success rate is not a promise for your specific number or session. Avoid any method intended to bypass Telegram's protections or access someone else's account.
Frequently asked questions
Is Telegram charging every user for an SMS code?
No universal fee is established by Telegram's documentation. A payment-required flow can apply to some country/provider situations. Trust the current official in-app screen for your account.
Will renting an SMS number remove Telegram's fee?
Not necessarily. Number rental and Telegram's own authorization decision are separate. Renting can also create recovery and ownership risks.
Can a code arrive without SMS?
Yes. Telegram says it may deliver the login code to an existing signed-in Telegram app. Check that session before assuming the SMS is missing.
